Laser Hair Removal

Shaving the legs for girls and shaving the face for boys has become a right of passage into adulthood. At first, it is new and exciting. But when you find yourself shaving that same hair ten years later, it is not as exciting anymore. Shaving and waxing are time-consuming and it’s frightening to think about all the money we’ve spent on shave cream, razors, waxing kits, and professional waxing. If you are tired of all that shaving, it’s time to take a look at laser hair removal!

What Is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser hair removal is an alternative treatment for shaving and waxing. This non-invasive treatment uses concentrated light energy to damage the hair follicle and prevent the growth of hair.  At Skinatomy Laser Clinic, we use  3 different lasers for hair removal:

  1. Candela Gentle YAGThe Gentle Yag laser system effectively treats various cosmetic skin issues including hair removal. This system removes unwanted hair and will not cause any damage to the structure of the skin. It is suitable for all skin types.
  2. LightSheer Diode LaserThe Lightsheer laser targets the hair root and damages it, leaving behind just a small stem that the skin pushes up to the surface where it is eventually released.  It is safe and effective for all skin types.
  3. Sciton ClearScan YAGThe ClearScan laser uses an automated system that can treat a number of hairs at the same time. This is a fantastic method for targeting large areas. It is a gentle, effective, and safe procedure for use on any type of skin.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

During laser hair removal, the laser emits a light that is absorbed by the pigment in the hair. The light energy is converted to heat, which damages the hair follicles that produce hairs. This damage inhibits or delays future hair growth.

When your treatment begins, the doctor will press a hand-held laser to your skin. Cooling devices and cooling gels may be used during the procedure depending on the type of laser being used. When the laser is activated, the laser beam will pass through your skin to the hair follicles. The intense heat from the laser beam damages the hair follicles. You might feel discomfort similar to a pinprick, but most patients find the discomfort minimal and tolerable.

A typical laser hair removal treatment takes about 15-60 minutes, depending on the area of the body that is being treated. Patients generally need 8 treatments over time. During the treatment series, the hair will thin and become finer in texture. Your hair will eventually stop regrowing, leaving you hair-free. Common areas of treatment include the back, bikini area, buttocks, legs, face, chest, underarms, and arms.
