What is Botox® Made Of?

It’s probably safe to say that everyone has heard of a product called Botox®. We are even familiar with its uses for reducing the expression lines on our aging faces. Forehead lines, lines between the eyes, and laugh lines are all areas that are commonly treated with Botox®.  Recently there have been more news reports on its alternate use in relieving chronic headaches and some of its other medical uses. But do we really know what this miracle substance is made of? Let’s take a look!

Botox®

Botox® is a treatment for fine lines and wrinkles that uses small, regulated amounts of a purified protein to reduce the activity of the facial muscles. This treatment is delivered through a series of injections into the muscles of the face which are responsible for the “expression lines” that we see appearing as we age.

Botox® works by blocking the nerve signals in the muscles around the injection site. When the nerves are blocked, the muscles do not move. Without movement, certain lines and wrinkles can be softened, reduced, or removed completely.  The effects of Botox® treatments last from 3 to 4 months. Each Botox® session will take 15 – 20 minutes with your medical professional, and results can be seen in 3-14 days. Since Botox® works only on wrinkles that are caused by muscle movement (the expression lines), it will not work on lines and wrinkles caused by loss of plumpness in the face due to aging or even dramatic weight loss.

What Is Botox® Made Of?

This FDA-approved injectable solution is made from botulinum toxin type A. This toxin is produced by the bacterium clostridium botulinum. The scientific name for Botox® is Onabotulinum Toxin A.

The raw materials for Botox® are manufactured by growing the bacteria and purifying it to remove the bacterial substances, leaving the purified neurotoxin complex behind to create the product. While something that is made from a bacteria does not sound like it could ever be glamorous or beneficial to most of us, this product has literally changed the faces of men and women all over the world.
