What is Botox?
Botox is a cosmetic treatment for fine lines and wrinkles, which provides a nonsurgical option for those seeking improved appearance of the facial skin. It is a purified protein that reduces activity by the muscles on the face, reducing the appearance of frown lines on the forehead, around the eyes, and between the brows. Botox is sometimes used as a preventative measure for reducing the look of lines and wrinkles as well.
How Does Botox Work?
Facial muscles are highly active, and contract each time we show an expression. Over time, this contraction of the muscles results in the formation of lines and wrinkles, which are factors of aging skin. Botox is a nonsurgical option for smoothing lines and wrinkles on the face. It relaxes the facial muscles that cause deepening lines over time. The relaxed facial muscles reduce the activity of the muscles in the area where administered, leaving a smooth, youthful appearance. Botox a popular option for those who are noticing wrinkles forming on their face.
How Long Does Botox Last?
Results vary for each client, but the effects of Botox treatments can potentially last from 3 – 4 months. A Botox session can take 15-20 minutes, and since treatments are nonsurgical, there is usually no downtime associated with Botox treatments. Post-treatment, it can take 3 days up to 2 weeks for Botox to fully penetrate the facial muscles, and for results to show*.
What is a Botox Session Like?
Since Botox is nonsurgical, there is no anesthesia required, however topical anesthetic cream may be applied to numb the application area. Most clients experience minimal discomfort during injection, and a relatively pain-free experience. For some, there may be minor bruising at injection sites. Your doctor will go through post treatment guidelines with you at your treatment session.
When Should I Get Botox?
Every client is different, so there is no definitive ideal age for Botox treatments. Some people decide to begin Botox in their 20’s as a preventative measure for the forming of wrinkles. Clients are typically 30 years and older, because this is when we see the collagen in the skin beginning to break down, and wrinkles form more easily. Botox relaxes the facial muscles, which helps prevent expression lines from becoming embedded in the skin, forming wrinkles. Botox is an option for anyone seeking to reduce or prevent the lasting effects of expression lines and wrinkles.
